When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Image
It is a big headline but brings a good question, almost a reflection. T heard this sentence in Drake's song "Own it" which stayed in my mind and I thought, "I have to write about it, it's a good topic!" When I thought when and what was the last new thing I did, it took a few moments until my memory find an answer. So I remembered my first trip to Vancouver. What amazing travel! Unforgettable in all ways, because everything was the first time. First time abroad, first airplane flight, first time far from my family, first time alone for a while. Good reasons to be special. I still remember those days and everything I lived and experienced there. But after I come back, I realized I haven't been done nothing new, it was like I was stuck in life. Depressed, I know. After think and think I remember one thing that always make me feel good and make my brain works: write. Full of courage and excitement I brought my blog back to live. I read my old posts and remem...

Cultura do Descartável

Image

How far can we go when we go abroad?

Image
These days, I was thinking about my self-development during my stay in Vancouver. I not only learnt English, I have been learning how to socialize with another culture. It is obvious all these differences have a strong impact in the first moments, but after a while you have to absorb and try to adapt and respect. I don't think that we should compare and make assumptions of which is "better" or "makes more sense". If go abroad and live as you live in your country, it doesn't make any sense! Travel to distant place, sometimes in a trip that takes one or more days, means experience new situations. So, if you keep your old habits and thoughts, you will never enjoy the maximum of you can. When I was in school, I used to observe student's behavior. After classes, most of them met their same-country friends and started to speak their native language.. What?!?! I just could think: "They are spending money for nothing!!!" It was rare find someone worrie...

800 words

Image
Today I wrote more than 800 words. I was training for the writing task 1 and was getting difficult to reach the limit of 150 words; I was writing 130 or 140! I struggled! I put my hands in my face I said: "Why I can not?!?! This is not possible!!!". I was angry with myself, almost disappointed. So I decided to write until I get more than 150. My target now is 170! I wrote about the same chart twice. And I got it: 176 words. And I decided to write more and I wrote three charts. If you think that I used computer to count the letters, you're wrong. I used my hands.....and I set the alarm. I had 20 minutes to write. It is exaustive, monotony, boring. But once you archive your goal, all of that stop to matter. You just think about your small victory.

How to keep focus in studying

Image
I know for many people keeping focus while studying is a little complicated and almost impossible. It is happening with me now. I always were a good student who liked study. However, after left university two years ago, back to study is exciting! I have been studying for IELTS for the last two and a half months, but now it is different; pressure, anxious, fear to fail are all together in my mind with English grammar and academic vocabulary. So, how to keep focus with all this in my head? Well, it's a good question that I have been looking the answer. To beginning, I had concentrated in my weakness and studied the correct use of grammar. Besides that, I have been listening radio and news to training my ears to understanding intonations, emphasis and pronunciation. Okay, this is about my studies plan. But let me talk about focus. One day, I heard from my teacher a good way that helps is have breaks while studying; he said: "after finish your homework, go for a walk or watch TV,...

Saudade - I miss you

Last week I went to a theater to attend the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival , @VLAFF , to watch OBRA, a Brazilian film direct by Gregorio Graziosi . The movie is about an architect, his new project and the implications of this in his personal life. Buy the way, a good movie in black and white with which makes a comparison between the building of material things and human beings, very interesting. But what I want to talk about is a word that appears in the subtitles and was not translate for English: SAUDADE. This word appeared followed by parenthesis with the word "I miss you" inside. From this time, my mind starts to think about the reason of the non-translation. That was no surprise for me that SAUDADE can not be translate; I learned this in school. What is unclear for me yet, is why not translate SAUDADE. Once, I heard is because in Portuguese the word means a felling. Then, I heard there is a word, "nostalgia", that is the nearest of the meaning. At this ...

Learning English

What is the purpose of learning another language? Business, university, curiosity. Everyone has a reason. For me, personally, starts from the need to get a good job with a good salary. Well, with you come from a country that does not cares about education, this could be difficult. But, when I had the opportunity to travel abroad, I fell in love for the language and its features. I have started to comprehending how my native language could help me to learn English. Grammar could be extremely useful when you understand the functions of nouns, adverbs and adjectives, also passive and active voice. Many people can say that speaking English is enough to be successful. I would say that more resources are needed. As I am still learning I just can share my opinion. Maybe I am wrong, maybe I am right. Who knows?
